A$AP Mob Interview with Village Voice

by @Djordje

No city in the world can assemble a musical motley crew of disorderly young gents like New York, although simply forming a quartet isn’t enough. Wu Tang Clan, Boot Camp Clik, The Diplomats—we’re talking wolf pack numbers.

The A$AP Mob‘s A$AP Rocky has been getting worldwide attention this year, directing a handful of videos, living the presidential life with Lana Del Rey, and releasing music. His official debut LongLiveASAP, comes out in the fall. In the meantime, though, the rest of the A$AP Mob—YamsJ. ScottFergyTwelvyAnt, and Nast—have been working on their own music, and today their collaborative project Lords Never Worry is out.

Each member of the crew has a vision—and the hunger to realize it—that promises to make the A$AP brand a dynasty, and not just a one-man show. In a rap world where too many rap crews are made up of one frontman and scores of talentless hanger-ons, it’s reassuring to see so much talent in one collective.

Ferg has perhaps the most polished songs; J. Scott is a quiet yet active officer, with more side projects than perhaps any other member. Original ASAP member Twelvy has a rep as a wild boy but a good head for business, as does Yams. Ant and Nast are bonkers on the mic, each with a distinct, dark style. SOTC took some time to examine the individuals who make up the nefarious A$AP Mob.

A$AP Ant Interview with True Laurels

by @Djordje

To only be a nineteen-year-old kid, Adam Kirkman a.k.a A$AP Ant, has created a great deal of buzz in the New York underground scene for the past three years. Starting out as a co-designer for his former streetwear line. Marino, Ant had been getting coverage by Complex, Creative Control and throwing poppin’ release parties in SoHo, as a high school student. Being a teenager living in Baltimore—a place where young artists usually go unnoticed—made those feats even more impressive. Since Marino, Ant has found himself a roster spot in the hottest phenomenon in hip-hop this past year that is A$AP Rocky’s crew, A$AP Mob.  His journey as a rapper is barely a year old, but in that time—with the help of Rocky’s buzz, no doubt—his “Coke And White Bitches” track, video for song “Told Ya” and newest feature with Rocky and Flatbush Zombies, “Bath Salts” have combined for more than 440,000 views on YouTube. His rhyming style is raw as he’s still figuring out what works for him, but he’s already showed separation from the fashion-conscious, more commercial-ready approach of his mob brothers; he’s developing as a gritty street artist, a tag he proudly accepts. The self-proclaimed “Beanie Siegel of A$AP” already has the respect within the emerging hip-hop underground movement, something he attributes to already having a name in New York’s scene that is now gaining international attention. Last weekend at Trillectro, Ant rocked “Bath Salts” with Flatbush Zombies, only to be later invited on stage by Schoolboy Q to perform “Coke And White Bitches”—making him the only rapper to rock multiple sets at the festival. During the event, I sat down to chat with him.

A$AP Ant & Young Shaka Interview with Vice

by @Djordje

When you say “Baltimore” in front of white people, they immediately think of the Wire—which is great to torrent and watch on your computer in eight hour sessions, but would be kind of scary to actually live through. But the truth is, real life in B-more might actually be gully-er than fiction, and MCs A$AP Ant and Young Shaka have lived it. The two hip hop diplomats of that infamous city are using their music to paint a picture that shows both the dark and the beautiful sides of the town known for its high murder rates and killer blue crab cuisine.

A$AP Ant is the only member of the Harlem-based A$AP Mob who’s not actually from NYC. He and Young Shaka have been close since middle school, hustling drugs before they moved on to hustling music. We first heard from the duo back in June when they dropped their first single, “Summer Nights,” off their yet-to-be released collaborative mixtape. Now they’re back again with a music video for the summer anthem, “On Sight.” This time around Ant has stepped off the mic and put himself in the director’s chair, while Young Shaka has taken center stage as the sole MC on the track.

We got on the phone with Ant and Young Shaka to discuss their forthcoming mixtape, ghetto life in B-more, and what exaclty “on sight” means.
