by @Djordje

Dallas is a long way from West Baltimore, but that’s where we found Adam Kirkman, 20, known to the hip-hop world as A$AP Ant, on a July night.

“I’m performing on tour with Rocky right now,” says Kirkman, referring to A$AP Rocky, the rapper whose album LONG.LIVE.A$AP hit number one earlier this year and who leads the Harlem-based A$AP Mob, which has become a dominant force in hip-hop. “I’m doing the hyping up onstage.”

A$AP Ferg Interview with Spin Magazine

by @Djordje

The Polo Grounds Studio in New York City’s south Bronx is tucked into the sixth floor of a drab, unassuming building that rises above the shadow of the Third Avenue Bridge, just a few hundred feet north of the Harlem River where the five-lane highway splits east. The recording studio itself — a sizable room with two large couches and red and white stripes overlaying grey walls — has personality compared to the building’s exterior, but is likewise generic. A stack of rusty lockers makes the space feel oddly transitory. It is here where many people hope A$AP Ferg, the next rapper out of A$AP Rocky’s crew, is working his way to stardom.

Born Darold Ferguson Jr., Ferg has spent much of 2013 in this studio recording his debut album Trap Lord, which is set to be released on August 20 via A$AP Worldwide and Polo Grounds Music. That it’s an album and not a mixtape is an important distinction to Ferg and his team, who have taken to Twitter recently to implore that the difference be recognized. For an unestablished MC this is mostly splitting hairs, but Trap Lord is rap music imagined on a grand and cinematic scale.

A$AP Ty Beats (born Tyshaun Holloway) is one of the most notable up-and-coming producers in hip-hop at the moment. He is the youngest member of hip-hop’s hottest rap/lifestyle collective A$AP Mob. Holloway hails from Virginia but also calls Harlem (139th and Lenox) home, he connected with front man A$AP Rocky via social media in 2011 and the rest is history. You may not know his face but you definitely heard his work as he produced Rocky’s two biggest songs “Pe$o” and “Purple Swag”. Holloway has also worked with TDE artist ScHoolboy Q (“Nightmare on Figg St.”) and Cutthroat Records artist Joey Fatts (“Pillow Talkin’”). He has been featured in numerous print publications including XXL Magazine and been shown on Global Grind TV. A$AP Nast on Complex’s List of 25 New Rappers To Watch Out For

Essential ListeningLords Never Worry
Pros: He’s in the A$AP Mob so he’ll get attention regardless.
Cons: He has to establish himself outside of Rocky’s shadow and Ferg’s growing appeal.

A$AP Rocky is a star and with the release of Trap Lord looming, A$AP Ferg has got next. Where does that leave A$AP Nast? Is a decent place, actually. If Ferg can become a legit star, the A$AP brand will only grow stronger which paves the way for Nast to get on. He had his shot on A$AP Mob’s Lords Never Worry tape, but only appeared on four songs. That said, “Black Mane” was one of the few highlights on a largely underwhelming release.

Nast can still distinguish himself because he’s nowhere nearly as jiggy as Rocky and isn’t as influenced by the “trap” as Ferg—he’s just a straight up brash shit talker and there’s always room in rap for one of those. As evidenced by his most recent outing, “Trillmatic” (peep below), if he errs on the side of being rooted in mid ’90s East Coast rap, he can offer the A$AP sound stripped of its Southern influence. —Insanul Ahmed
