A$AP Ferg Launches a New Line of Socially Conscious Streetwear

by @Djordje

Before A$AP Ferg had a platinum single, his mom dressed him for school. “I went to public school for junior high, and she’d make me wear a uniform, even though you weren’t required to wear one,” the 28-year-old rapper explains. “I’d bring sneakers in my backpack—I’d be wearing khakis and a white button-down with new Jordans.” Ferg, aka Darold D. Brown Ferguson, Jr., is currently revisiting his scholastic wardrobe due to Traplord x Uniform, a new collaboration between his clothing line and the sustainable, socially conscious label. Available online at Bloomingdale’s today, the limited-edition streetwear capsule is made up of 10 pieces, including a logo tee, hoodie, military shirt, camo jacket, and bucket hat. Full men’s and women’s collections will drop later this summer on Traplord’s and Uniform’s own sites; everything retails for under $200 and benefits children in need.

Founded by Chid Liberty in September 2016, Uniform is ethically produced in Africa, and for each item sold, a school uniform is produced and given to a local child. Earlier this month, Ferg had the opportunity to travel to Liberia with Liberty and meet the women who work in Uniform’s factories. He also spent time with the kids who would receive the new uniforms, as captured by photographer Daniel Arnold in the images above. “These uniforms are really how you decipher the kids in Africa,” Ferg says. “You see a lot of them in the streets because they can’t afford a uniform and therefore can’t go to school.” He adds that “providing them with free uniforms not only enables these kids to get an education, but I think it makes them happy and empowered—I’m a strong believer in dressing the way you want to be.”

There were kids who got up and rapped for Ferg, he recalls, and one girl who said she wanted to be a doctor. Everyone whom he met along the way was impressed with him and his career, but to his happy surprise, they were even more in awe of his mom and extended family, who came with him on the trip: “I was surprised to see how they really embraced them and appreciated the fact that my family supported me—they said, ‘He’s a star because of his family.’” He’s certainly making his family very proud, especially the woman who first taught him how to dress to impress (even when proper attire wasn’t actually required).

Vogue: Playboi Carti Is the Fashion World’s Latest Rapper Heartthrob

by @Djordje

Playboi Carti is late to his shoot at an apartment complex on 139th Street in Harlem. Here, the 21-year-old rapper has a gang of publicists waiting for him, while a crew of Grailed employees organizes piles of clothes for him to try on. Carti loves the site Grailed, which is like a virtual candy store for those with a taste for Raf Simons and Balmain. “I’ve always been a thrift store kid,” he later tells me. But these clothes are far from humble thrift store finds: A stylist has draped a $20,000 fur coat and a bevy of other haute goods over the couch. Eventually, he arrives, making a much-awaited entrance in a new pair of sneakers. Who can be angry at him? He’s a lanky, handsome heartthrob, who wears his skinny jeans with serious swagger. “I don’t like baggy clothes,” he says. “I’m a skinny dude, so I think [skinny jeans] look better on me.”

Carti first came onto the scene in 2015 with his song “Broke Boi,” a catchy hit that spoke about a tricked-out Jesus piece and poked fun at squares “in the mall buying ice.” It earned the attention of rappers like A$AP Rocky. Just a few days ago, he dropped his self-titled mixtape, which features singles like “Wokeuplikethis*” and “Magnolia,” and got as high as number four on the iTunes album charts. Carti’s fashion résumé is also impressive: He was in the Yeezy Season 5 show, performed this past season at VFiles with rapper Lil Uzi Vert, and made a cameo in one of Drake’s OVO lookbooks. During New York Fashion Week: Men’s, he headed over to Raf Simons’s first New York show with A$AP Rocky. “That felt like the first time [at a fashion show]. That one was the real deal; it felt amazing,” he says. “I met Raf, and I got the butterflies.”

Meet Playboi Carti, the Next Atlanta Rap Prodigy to Take Fashion By Storm

by @Djordje

Playboi Carti is rarely at a loss for words. Publicly, the young rapper projects a sense of perpetual ease. But this wasn’t that. “That was one of my happiest moments…” he began, before trailing off. He flipped his braids back and ran a hand through them pensively, revealing the birthmark on his left cheek, which has become a trademark. “I was broke as f—! I didn’t have anything growing up. I was wearing whatever I had. And then…”

He was having a hard time recounting the occasion when A$AP Rocky, his mentor and frequent collaborator, brought him to New York Fashion Week this February. That’s where Rocky introduced him to Raf Simons at his debut Calvin Klein show. “I met Raf! Not even like some streetwear designer, but Raf!” Carti shook his head.

It was a crowning moment that capped off everything good that’s befallen Carti over the last few years, from signing with A$AP Worldwide (with co-signs from Drake and Kanye) to emerging as Atlanta’s next big thing to, one day last week, sitting on the 24th floor of One World Trade Center, the New York skyline laid below him.

Still only 21, Playboi Carti, born Jordan Carter, has never released a full-length project. He started rapping in earnest only about three years ago as a high schooler, and has already been featured on a handful of tracks by Gucci Mane, Lil Uzi Vert, and his A$AP Mob family. But unlike his contemporaries Uzi and Lil Yachty, who constantly churn out mixtapes and loosie singles, Carti’s musical output has been remarkably scant. Still, he boasts over half a million followers on Instagram and a fan base so rabid and obsessive that Carti’s comments section has turned into a battleground of sorts, with fans alternatively pleading for new music (“DROP A F—ING TAPE I LOVE YOU”), and berating him for never releasing (“I been waiting like 8 years for this tape. What if I die and never get to hear it?”).

“My fans try to troll me,” Carti said warily, even though he likes to playfully troll them right back. For example, he made the cover of his highly-anticipated debut project supposedly titled Cash Carti, a collage of angry fan comments. Then, last week, he threw gas on the fire with a mysterious countdown clock on his website, ticking down to Friday, April 14. Would it finally be #CartiSeason? Or was this simply another Carti ruse? Is it even an album?
