(Video) A$AP Rocky Breaks Down “A$AP Forever” for Genius

by @Djordje

Back in January, A$AP Rocky started teasing his upcoming album Testing with a series of sporadically released new tracks. On April 5, the Harlem rapper shared the project’s first official single “A$AP Forever.” The song is produced by frequent Rocky collaborator Hector Delgado and is built around a sample of Moby’s 2000 hit “Porcelain.” Not only has “A$AP Forever” reached No. 65 on the Billboard Hot 100, its trippy music video has over 24 million YouTube views.

A$AP Rocky’s Complex May 2018 Cover Story

by @Djordje

“Have you ever cheated on your boyfriend?”

“No.”

“Don’t lie.”

A$AP Rocky and I are in a studio in Brooklyn for a cover shoot and interview, and he’s running the show. So far, he’s asked me when I bought my white, hoof-like Martin Margiela boots, what brands my black jeans and leather jacket are, whether or not I have a boyfriend, and how long I’ve been with said boyfriend. But there’s more he’d like to know.

“So, listen. Hold on, let me check,” he says. Committed to playing the role of interviewer, he looks down at the white notecards he borrowed from me and pretends to examine his next question. “You got any kids?”

“No.”

“Oh, yeah. We gotta mark that one off.” He pretends to draw an “X” with his fingers on the notecard. “Do you want any kids?”

“Yeah. One, maybe two. Do you want kids?”

“I do,” he says.

“Boy or girl?”

“Sometimes I say girl, sometimes I say boy. It depends. I’ll take whatever.”

“How many?”

“One or two. Maybe not right now, but eventually.”

“Too soon?”

“Nah, it’s not too soon for me.”

Rocky is extremely charming—magnetic personality, a perfectly chiseled jawline that hugs a perfect smile—when he wants to be. And right now, he’s in a playful and jovial mood. “I’m having fun by the way,” he says.

It’s a stark departure from just minutes ago. Earlier in our conversation, the 29-year-old Harlem rapper was avoiding my questions, telling me to never ask a few again. At one point, when I asked what happened to the luxury fur line he once said he’d been developing, he asked if I was “working with the feds.”

“Why are you trying to get me in trouble so much, bro?” he said. “Do you have actually have a vendetta against me? Why are you asking me about fur in 2018 knowing them PETA motherfuckers are gonna come looking for me, knowing I been killing my Instagram with furs the past couple months?”

It’s hard to tell if he was bored, tired, irritated, or high off the blunts he’d been hitting. Maybe it was a combination of everything. In any event, Rocky turns the charm on and off at will, and it’s impossible to tell when each version of Rocky will emerge. He doesn’t seem to care what I think, an interesting tactic for a rapper with more to sell than ever.

A$AP Ferg Feels ‘Like a Walking MoMA Installation’

by @Djordje

When ASAP Ferg was still a teenager in Harlem, he started making crystal-studded pendants. He would sketch designs of characters like Bart Simpson and Mega Man, then hand the drawings over to Earl Harley (also known as “Harley, the buckle man”). Mr. Harley would create the bases for Ferg, who would then add Swarovski crystals and sell the pendants. They cost him about $200 to make; he sold them for about $700 a piece.

A decade later, Ferg, born Darold Ferguson Jr., is hawking pricier gems. This month, he became the first male rapper to appear as a spokesman for Tiffany & Co., the luxury jeweler. Ferg, 29, is not yet a megastar nor the most famous artist in the ASAP crew (that would be Rocky). But in collaborating with him, Tiffany has aligned itself with a princeling of Harlem fashion who aims to honor the legacy of his father, the designer Darold Ferguson Sr., by out-accomplishing him.

During a recent interview at The Blue Box Cafe at the Tiffany flagship store on Fifth Avenue, Ferg was frank about the mutual interest driving the partnership.

“I feel like we open up doors for each other,” he said of Tiffany. “I show them my world, they show me their world.”
