Jimmy Choo Style Diary with A$AP Ferg

by @Djordje

The impact of hip hop on fashion can hardly be overstated. Since its emergence in the 1970s, one of the key factors in hip hop’s success has been the combined appeal of different forms of creative expression. Harlem-born rapper A$AP Ferg, shot here exclusively in Jimmy Choo’s A/W 2017 collection, has operated very much within that tradition. As a musician, artist, designer and general polymath, for this 29-year-old—originally christened Darold D. Brown Ferguson, Jr.—creativity has always been about more than just the music.

“Through fashion and art I am able to communicate with everyone, in all walks of life,” Ferg explains as we survey the selection of decadent slippers and hand-finished DERBY loafers lining the Grand Penthouse Suite sitting atop New York’s Plaza Hotel. “Rap can pigeonhole you sometimes. It can be hard to communicate with people outside of the community once you’re in it—but with fashion and art it’s limitless. Designing and creating art allow me to think more broadly and that helps me to push hip hop culture forward.”

Fashion, in particular, has been a lifelong pursuit inspired by his father’s involvement in the business. “A lot of my father’s work influenced my early style—and even now—because he was the first person I knew who owned a boutique,” Ferg recalls. “He had workers in a factory producing his clothing and he made his own clothing line, featuring silk screen and graphic designs on t-shirts.”

(Video) A$AP Rocky Shows Vogue His Bodega In Selfridges

by @Djordje

This week, A$AP Rocky opened the doors to his AWGE Bodega: a Selfridges pop-up housed in the basement of the London department store. A remarkably accurate replica of the archetypal New York corner store, he is selling everything from AWGE-branded Krispy Kremes and cuddly toys (in homage to the ever-present bodega cat that you might find sleeping on a loaf of bread) to custom-designed stationery, cushions and beverages (alongside, of course, a selection of garments designed by he himself and his AWGE army). And it really is him selling it – intermittently, the multi-hyphenate rapper will appear behind the till, Selfridges name badge pinned to his chest, working the cash register and ringing up sales. Such a position is slightly unfamiliar to him – after all, he says, he might know how to open a till, but he’s never worked behind one – but he seems dedicated to its success.

The final chapter in Selfridges’ initiative Music Matters, which has explored the crossover between luxury fashion and music merch, the AWGE Bodega is an authentic immersion into Rocky’s world — and a celebration of the different communities who come together in such spaces to re-up on sweets and soft drinks. Whether you’re heading down to pick up a branded calculator or a Rocky figurine, take a tour with the man himself to get the lay of the land.

A$AP Nast Announces Collaboration with Converse

by @Djordje

A$AP Nast, an avid collector of mid-century modern furniture, teams with Converse for a footwear and apparel collection incorporating materials of various textures, patterns and understated shades all inspired the recording artist’s favorite period of design history.

“Being born and raised in Harlem, I’m excited to drop my [first] design collaboration in my city. Fashion has always been a priority whether expressed through my style or rap– I am telling a story,” says Nast. “As a young creative, Converse gave me the opportunity to share my vision, passion, and personal inspiration of a timeless era through the collection.”

The Converse x A$AP Nast collection features a One Star and Chuck Taylor All Star 70 in addition to a custom Converse t-shirt. The One Star is made with a soft-hued corduroy upper in Arrowhead, extra fuzzy laces, and the model’s iconic star in a deep Red Dahlia leather. The Chuck Taylor All Star 70 features a plaid outer with two interchangeable fuzzy laces in Egret and Greener Pastures. The phrase “SOMEWHERE IN MID-CENTURY” appears on both the sneaker’s sidewalls, reminding of the era that influences A$AP Nast’s creative direction. The same phrase is also displayed on the front of the T-shirt, available in Cream, Cardinal, and Dark Chocolate.

The limited edition Converse x A$AP Nast collection launches September 28 at 5pm EST exclusively at the Foot Locker flagship in Times Square.
