Can A$AP Ferg Be His Generation’s Next Great Visionary?

by @Djordje

A$AP Ferg is tucked in the back of the Crosby Bar at New York’s Crosby Hotel, and he’s feeling under the weather. He’s wearing an inside out sweatshirt with “PSYCHO” emblazoned on the front, made by his uncle (the “Psycho” on his latest album), along with Adidas track pants and a pair of his Trap Lord x Adi Ease kicks from his Adidas collection. A packed press schedule is stopping him from getting better, but he’s in good spirits eating poached salmon with quinoa and sweet potatoes, while sipping on a glass of Riesling. I casually recite Kanye West’s “beasting off the Riesling” line and Ferg perks up a bit. “Kanye’s so funny because I’m just hearing from madd different sources, like he must’ve been jamming the songs I put out ‘cause he went on Twitter and said he loves my album,” he says with a warm smile. “I heard from somebody that’s working with him in Germany that Kanye said I’m his favorite artist.” Despite being arguably at the top of his game, things like that still mean something to A$AP Ferg.

Born Darold Ferguson Jr., Ferg was raised on 143rd Street between Amsterdam and Broadway in Harlem’s Hamilton Heights (“Hungry Ham,” if you ask him). His father designed both the Bad Boy Records logo and Andre Harrell’s logo among others, which infused fashion into Ferg at a young age. His start-up clothing line Devoni Clothing had artists like Chris Brown and Swizz Beatz rocking his belts long before Ferg even touched a microphone. His ascension as part of A$AP Mob was swift—some may argue that it derived from a tight grip on Rocky’s coattails, though now Ferg has carved his own niche in the game.

A$AP Ferg is like a levelheaded Kanye West. He has huge dreams, and gets animated as he discusses his AGOLDE denim capsule collection with Citizens For All Humanity, designed after the jeans from his “Work” video. He wants to do more fashion and film, but hopes to reach a place where he can readily receive the capital to do it all (sound familiar?). He says the glitz and glamour of fame don’t faze him—and while he rocks his name on a diamond-encrusted ring that spans the length of four knuckles, he views it as a piece of art over a proof of purchase.

(Video) French Montana – Off The Rip (Remix) ft. A$AP Rocky

by @Djordje

You couldn’t set foot outside in New York City last summer without hearing French Montana’s “Off the Rip,” a cut off the Bronx rapper’s spring 2015 Casino Life 2: Brown Bag Legend mixtape, and this past weekend, French’s latest tape Wave Gods premiered on DJ Khaled’s Apple Music show closing out on a remix starring A$AP Rocky. Today we present the Spiff TV directed video for the cut, wherein French and Rocky lounge around smoking blunts and sipping on Solo cups at a banging house party. Keep an eye out for projectors screening footage of Coke Boys’ Chinx and A$AP Mob mastermind Yams (RIP) and an appearance from Keeping Up with the Kardashians badboy Scott Disick.

(Video) A$AP Ferg – New Level ft. Future

by @Djordje

It feels like just yesterday that A$AP Ferg was riding around on a party train with Skrillex and Diplo, but now he’s thankfully hopped off and into a new endeavour. The video for “New Level,” Ferg’s song with Future, is a fantastic visual accompaniment to a track that’s about rising above adversity to achieve something noteworthy. Both A$AP Ferg and Future have overcome a lot in the past calendar year, and the similarities are not lost on the A$AP Mob member. Of the video, he says:

“Future and I have a lot in common – we’re mutual fans of each other’s work and we both love the grind of getting a lot of work done,” said Ferg over email. “The ‘New Level’ video is a perfect representation of that grind with sports driven cameos by Cleveland Browns wide receiver Josh Gorden, Olympic fencer Daryl Homer, and BMX biker Nigel Sylvester. We all came from the bottom to new levels in our careers. Also, I heard many athletes turn up to my music before their games so I dedicate this video to them.”

A$AP Rocky Interview with Noisey Australia

by @Djordje

asap3

It’s been a year of extremes for A$AP Rocky, or Pretty Flacko, the name he tells me he prefers when we are introduced. The Sundance premiere of Dope, in which the Harlem rapper made his acting debut, came just six days after the tragic loss of his friend and A$AP worldwide co-creator, A$AP Yams.

Yams’s (born Steven Rodriguez) print is all over Rocky’s latest album At.Long.Last.A$AP or A.L.L.A. He co-executive produced the album, and Rocky pays full tribute to his co-conspirator on the album cover by rocking Yams’s distinctive purple birthmark.

A.L.L.A is an impressive record. A considered chronicle of an artist transitioning from a young man filled with ambition, bravado and game to one who has truly lived and wishes to speak honestly. It also sees Rocky flex a more dexterous flow with a confidence that has him go toe-to-toe with Yeezy, Weezy, Juicy J, Future, Schoolboy Q, and, of course, Rod Stewart.

On the phone Rocky is warm, gracious and playful, constantly acknowledging and praising others. He explains that he wants to make the rawest music possible for his rawest fans and that he’s excited for next year’s Australia tour, presented by Noisey.

(Video) Live From the Streets: Chinatown ft. A$AP Ferg

by @Djordje

Mr. Green is back again with a new batch of tight collaborators, and for this latest espisode, he’s hooking up with A$AP Ferg.

Mr Green had this to say about the collaboration: “This might come as a surprise but I like to trap music, it’s dope. I’m a boom bap dude at heart, but there is something crazy exciting about trap music that I can’t get enough of. I’m not sure if it’s the sub bass, the fast hi-hats, or the ridiculous chants that the artist say over and over, but I’m feeling it.

“When my people from VICE/Noisey told me A$AP Ferg wanted to do an episode I was all the way down. I immediately sat for a couple hours and chopped some samples I got from Chinatown in New York and put the beat together. A couple days later me, Sam and the crew headed uptown to Polo Grounds studio to meet Ferg. He was mad cool. We immediately hit it off and started talking about growing up riding bikes and how the BMX/skate worlds overlap into hip-hop and the music industry.

“It kind of felt like I was talking to one of my friends I grew up skating with and not some mainstream rapper/celebrity dude. He did a couple crazy verses and a hook about riding bikes and then we took off. Ferg and I have a mutual friend Nigel Sylvester—who I know through Animal Bikes—so while I was making the track, I met up with him. We recorded some bikes sounds and then I threw them in the mix. Finally, we checked out Animal Street jam in Newark and got a bunch of dope footage. Shout out to Gabby, Nigel, VICE/Noisey, Ferg and the whole A$AP Mob, Animal Bikes, Ralph Sinisi & everyone that attended the 2014 Animal Street Jam in Newark.”
