A$AP Mob Interview with XXL

by @Djordje

Inside Platinum Sound Recording Studios there’s roughly 30 music industry folks drinking Brooklyn Lagers and eating an assortment of deli meats and mini sandwiches. As a bevy of weed smoke fills up the air, A$AP Ant a.k.a YG Addie, J. Scott, A$AP Lou, Key!, A$AP Ferg and A$AP Rocky are seen relaxing on the couch as onlookers surround them. The scene is the definition of cozy; from tracksuit shorts to baggy T-shirts, A$AP Mob are chilling like they’re in their own living room. Rocky introduces what’s to come and begins to play the first fours songs of Cozy Tapes, Vol. 2: Too Cozy. While the project can be heard throughout the room, Rocky gets his Spike Jonze on, walking around the room filming the listeners with a handheld camcorder. There are smiles and shoulder rolls everywhere until the music pauses. The Mob want to wait for A$AP Nast to arrive.

Rap fans have been waiting for Cozy Tapes, Vol. 2 since it was teased just a few months after Cozy Tapes: Vol. 1 dropped last October. The time between the two installments is less that a year apart, making it cear that the Mob are sitting on a ton of new music. In a blink of an eye, Vol. 2 was already on consumers’ phones and laptops.

The second installment of the Cozy Tapes series includes features from everyone in the A$AP Mob and AWGE collective. A$AP Twelvyy, A$AP Ferg, A$AP Rocky, A$AP Ant, A$AP Nast and A$AP TyY are on the tape plus new affiliated members Playboi Carti, Key! and Smooky Margielaa—a charismatic 15-year-old rapper from the Bronx. Other guest appearances are Chief Keef, Lil Yachty, Gucci Mane, Schoolboy Q, Joey Bada$$ and Pro Era, Flatbush Zombies, Jaden Smith, Quavo, and Frank Ocean. Vol. 2, Too Cozy is a friends-only project.

Since the first installment of the Cozy Tapes, several Mob members have dropped their own projects including Twelvyy’s long-awaited 12 and Ferg’s Still Striving mixtape, a year after his second album, Always Strive and Prosper. Now that Vol. 2 is here, things are only going to get busier while other members patiently wait for their turn to drop their solo work.

During the Cozy Tapes, Vol. 2: Too Cozy listening session, XXL sat down with the members of the Mob to learn more about Smooky Margielaa, discuss who had the best verse on the Vol. 2, what projects are coming out next and the real definition of cozy.

XXL Show & Prove: Playboi Carti

by @Djordje

Never doubt the power of the Internet. For Playboi Carti, it changed his life. All 18 songs on his SoundCloud page have over one million plays, including “Broke Boi” and “Fetti,” which have collected over 13 million plays each. “I feel like niggas really be on my shit,” says the young rapper. “That’s why I’m picky about what I put on my SoundCloud. That’s why I’m taking time with my [first] mixtape. I‘m going crazy. If you look on my tracks, bro, it shows you my progression.”

Growing up in South Atlanta, the 21-year-old MC (born Jordan Carter) dabbled with hip-hop, but didn’t decide to take it seriously until his voice deepened while in his senior year at North Springs High School. Upon graduation, Carti moved to the Big Apple borough of The Bronx in order to focus more on music and change his scenery. Over the next eight months, he focused on recording and making relationships in hip-hop, especially with members of the A$AP Mob and sporadically put out a handful of songs to moderate success.

5 Things You Need To Know About A$AP Rocky’s ‘A.L.L.A.’ Album

by @Djordje

AsapRocky_LongLast_Cov-1024x1024

It’s been over two years since A$AP Rocky dropped his debut album Long. Live. ASAP. Over those two years, it seemed like Rocky was doing everything else rather than releasing music. He dived further into high fashion by posing in DKNY’s Spring 2014 ad campaign and playing football in Times Square with supermodels Cara Delevingne, Jourdan Dunn and Eliza Cummings. He was featured in Vogue with his then-supermodel girlfriend, Chanel Iman (they have since broken up but remain friends). Famed designer Salvatore Ferragamo reached out to Flacko himself to be a part of his online series A Man’s Story. And he also released a five-part documentary series titled SVDDXNLY.

You can say #FlackoJodyeSeason began in October of last year with the release of “Multiply.” After disowning Hood By Air and Been Trill in the song and providing sleek visuals, A$AP fans began to salivate at the mouth for the Harlem native’s sophomore project. When the late A$AP Yams spoke to XXL in the same month, he explained why dropping “Multiply” then was right on time.

“It was the perfect timing,” Yams said. “A lot of people thought we were out of the playoffs. So we were like, hold up, y’all got us fucked up right now, we just as cold as anybody else. We just had to remind muthafuckas about what time it was. That’s what it comes down to. It’s been a dry-ass year musically. Why not end the year off right?”

A$AP Ferg has been a busy man. From fashion to music to painting his face, very quietly the Harlem native has distinguished himself and his Trap Lord brand as a creative force to be reckoned with. Since his debut album, Fergenstein released his 19-track mixtape Ferg Forever last November, paying homage to his father by reimagining his pop’s artwork as the cover design. He went on tour with YG while also releasing sleek visuals for singles like “Dope Walk” starring model Cara Delevingne. Amidst all of this, Ferg also released his clothing collection with Young & Reckless.

At streetwear store Community 54 in Manhattan last week to promote his new line of gear for his Trap Lord line, Ferg spoke to XXL about his new album, why it’s better than Trap Lord and what’s next for the A$AP Mob.

It’s been a minute since we’ve heard from A$AP Ferg, but that doesn’t mean he hasn’t been working. But last Friday Ferg returned triumphantly with his brand new 19-track mixtape Ferg Forever, a teaser for both his new BestCoast Connection Tour with YG and his upcoming sophomore album, which he told XXL in October was “almost done.”

Just before his tape hit the streets, XXL spoke to Ferg about the changes he’s made to his sound, why it’s important for him to speak on the situation in Ferguson and why it’s okay to not be lyrical all the damn time.
