How A$AP Ferg’s Father Inspired Him to Live a Life of Impact

Everything that multi-talented rapper and creative A$AP Ferg knows about his purposeful living came from observing his father, clothing designer and businessman Darold Durard Brown Ferguson, Sr.

Ferg’s dad created the logo for both Andre Harrell’s iconic Uptown Records and Sean “Diddy” Combs’ Bad Boy Entertainment. A pillar in his Harlem, New York community, the elder Ferguson owned a popular t-shirt print shop and boutique with a recognizable neon sign outside that inspired A$AP Ferg to adopt neon green as his signature color.

I’m letting [my father’s] legacy live throughout my work.

But after succumbing to kidney failure in 2005, the death of Ferg’s dad inspired the now 31-year-old high energy performer behind songs like “Work” and “Plain Jane” to take a closer look at himself and make some necessary lifestyle changes.

“I’m letting his legacy live throughout my work,” Ferg tells Shondaland. “That’s paying homage to him.”
